Wow Chia – a delicious blend of cold-pressed fruit juice and hydrated chia.

Where do vegans and vegetarians get their protein? It’s a tiresome question we’re all familiar with, so hooray for Wow Chia, the latest kid on the protein block! After reviewing protein packed Dr Zak’s Powdered Peanut Butter and The Protein Ball Co recently, I was excited to try these fruity beauties for a totally different protein hit.

The ethos behind Wow Chia…

Chia seeds may be tiny, but they punch well above their weight when it comes to nutrition.

“We harvest our organic chia seeds from a flowering plant in the mint family called Salvia Hispanics, which is native to South America. It’s complete nutritional profile exceeds that of any other whole food, being the healthiest of the healthy.

Each Wow Chia drink contains 11.36g of chia, which is more protein than an egg, 3 times more fibre than a bowl of porridge, more omega 3 than a salmon fillet and, as much calcium as a glass of milk.”

Now, if you’re a chia seed newbie, the drink consistency might come as a bit of a surprise. Chia seeds are ‘bubbly’ in texture, so this is similar to drinking a smoothie with ‘bits’, rather than a smooth juice. The first mouthful may be a little unusual, but it’s definitely worth enjoying the whole bottle.

The best bits about Wow Chia…

Watermelon and Pomegranate
* hydrated chia seeds
* apple juice * watermelon juice * pomegranate juice * blackberry pulp
I wasn’t hugely looking forward to drinking this one as I’m not a big fan of watermelon, but even I have to admit that the pinky/red blush looked inviting. A cautious sip later and I was surprised that I actually enjoyed it. Both flavours are really subtle and the profile was definitely watermelon with an aftertaste of pomegranate.

Apple, Spinach and Kiwi
* apple juice * hydrated chia seeds * spinach juice * kiwi pulp * vitamin c
I’m brilliant at eating my greens, but not so good drinking them, so I approached this bottle with caution. It’s another subtle combination – a soft apple flavour with a slight spinach aftertaste. I couldn’t really detect the kiwi, but that’s probably because it only contains a small amount of kiwi pulp, and that gets mixed in with the chia’s bubbly texture. It was acceptable to me as a non-green smoothie drinker, but not one of my favourites.

Pineapple and Lemon
* pineapple juice * hydrated chia seeds * apple juice * lemon juice
There was a lovely strong pineapple taste about this bottle that contrasted well with the slightly sour hint of lemon. It was definitely more flavoursome than the previous two bottles, and was perfect for conquering that afternoon sweet tooth moment

Orange and Mango
* orange juice
* chia seeds * mango pulp
It turns out that I’d saved the best for last. This one was a delicious mix of freshly squeezed orange juice (not that horrible orange concentrate stuff) mixed with mango which tasted sooooo good. I literally couldn’t stop drinking it and the bottle was gone in under a minute! This is definitely my go-to favourite wow chia flavour.

If I could tweak anything…

I think the biggest issue for chia virgins will be the texture! Most people are used to drinking a smooth juice or a thickened smoothie, and this fits somewhere in between. The bubbly texture may seem a bit strange at first, but I’m pretty sure that the fruity flavours will win you over in the end.

Lottie’s verdict on Wow Chia Cold-Pressed Drinks…

It’s always exciting to find vegan goodies that answer the eternal protein question, and the fact they’re all so tasty means that most people will probably be open to trying them. So much vegan food rocks, and Wow Chia drinks joins other goodies in that Hall of Fame! Why not be vegan-curious and try Wow Chia drinks for yourself?

Wow Chia is stocked in Whole Foods Market, Planet Organic (in store and online), Selfridges, Sourced Market and various independents and cafes in London. They have big plans though, so I’ll update this as soon as new stockists are confirmed! In the meantime, follow their updates on TwitterFacebook, Instagram and Pinterest.

The small print. These products were kindly gifted by Wow Chia for me to try and review, so this is my honest opinion of them. I wasn’t paid to post this and let’s face it, if it was an advert, I would have loved them all equally. 😀
