The Primal Pantry – Great tasting paleo bars, made with real food ingredients and free of junk.

I don’t know about you, but in every bag, coat and car pocket I carry emergency snack bars. Most of the time they tend to be Nakd bars as they’re so easily available, so it was with great excitement that I came across these vegan beauties to try for a change…

The ethos behind The Primal Pantry…

Nutritionist Suzie Walker worked with clients who’d adopted a paleo (cave man) lifestyle, but then struggled to find healthy snacks to fuel their workouts, feed their kids or, have handy whilst out and about. With some nuts, coconut, a blender and a panel of eager tasters, Suzie decided to make her own paleo bars, based on this ethos:

“The Primal Pantry’s purpose is to provide a range of tasty nutritious foods, which fully compliment a paleo lifestyle, free of any grains, dairy, refined sugars and vegetable oils and always made with 100% natural ingredients.”

Like me, she only believes in adding ingredients that you’d have in your own kitchen cupboards. High five sister! They’ve now expanded the range to include two vegan protein bars, which is perfect for those of us who love to lift (or in fact anyone who likes to eat yummy stuff, let’s be honest!).

The best bits about the NEW Primal Pantry protein bars…

Cocoa and Orange Protein Bar
* dates * coconut nectar * hemp protein * almonds * cocoa powder * dried orange * cocoa nibs
I’m a complete sucker for anything chocolate orange or salted caramel flavour, so I’m naturally biased towards loving this one! It’s a great balance of chocolate and orange with a pleasing crunch of nibs for texture, and was a good snack that actually filled a gap with a hit of vegan protein.

Mixed Berries Protein Bar
* dates * coconut nectar * hemp protein * pumpkin seeds * raspberries * goji berries * almonds * apricots
I saved this for a post-work, pre-workout snack to see how it would fuel me. On first bite, there was a burst of berry flavour that was nice, but it was difficult to distinguish what the berries actually were. The pumpkin seeds gave it some interest (more would have been good), but the overall texture and flavour wasn’t as well disguised as in the cocoa orange, and I found it a little ‘hempy’. I did find it got me successfully through my workout though.

The best bits about The Primal Pantry bar range…

Almond and Cashew
* dates * almonds * cashews * almond oil
This one has a lovely, sweet date flavour mixed with a creamy, nutty taste and texture. I really enjoyed eating a nut bar without any hidden nasties or guilt, and it’s definitely on an par with my favourite Nakd bar.

Coconut and Macadamia
* dates * coconut * cashews* macadamia * almond oil
This bar has an overwhelming flavour of coconut, so it’s a must for all you who’re coconut crazy! It’s absolutely jam-packed with nuts which makes for great texture and taste, and the mix of macadamias and cashews works well. Tasty, but the intense coconut meant it wasn’t my favourite.

Apple and Pecan
* dates * almonds * organic apple * pecans * cinnamon * almond oil
The flavour of real apple comes through in this one, which is a lovely change from those fake-tasting alternatives. Pairing it with nuts works well, although it wasn’t overwhelmingly obvious which type of nuts were in there based on just their flavour. Another one just made it into my top three favourites!

Brazil Nut and Cherry
* dates * Brazil nuts * cherries * almond oil
I loooooove cherries and don’t mind Brazil nuts, so was really looking forward to this one. It’s firm yet moist, and was the perfect pre-gym snack. A bite confirmed that you’ll enjoy this if you’re the opposite to me and love Brazil nuts, but don’t mind cherries, as the cherry flavour is very subtle compared to the nuts. I enjoyed it, but wished the flavours could swap places.

Hazelnut and Cocoa
* dates * hazelnuts * almonds * organic cocoa * organic vanilla * almond oil
My thoughts turned to nutella when I read this tasty combination and it didn’t disappoint! It’s a classic pairing of flavours and great to find in a healthy snack bar. My only swap would be cocoa for cacao as it’s less processed and full of nutrients. This is definitely my favourite Primal Pantry bar of the bunch.

If I could tweak anything…

The ingredients in each Primal Pantry bar makes it easy to enjoy a healthy snack on the run. My taste buds would have preferred more cherry and less coconut in a couple of the bars, but each to their own. My only tweak would be the price – Nakd bars are half the cost and I would definitely buy these if they were more similarly priced.

Lottie’s verdict on The Primal Pantry…

Everything about these bars can be summed up as tasty, healthy, and no hidden nasties. It ticks all the boxes I’m looking for in a healthy snack, I’ll definitely be buying more in the future. Why not be vegan-curious and try these for yourself?

Buy your favourite flavours from their online shop and follow them on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

The small print – these snacks were kindly gifted by The Primal Pantry for me to try and review, so this is my honest opinion of them. I wasn’t paid to post this and let’s face it, if it was an advert, I would have claimed to love them all equally! 🙂
